Investing in Automotive Maintenance

Buying a new vehicle is a large investment that has many ongoing costs such as insurance and maintenance. Increasing the life of a vehicle can be accomplished through continuous maintenance and upkeep; car breakdowns can also be increased if not taken care of properly.

Taking care of a car requires constant monitoring and continuous maintenance. Manufacturers set certain dates and times cars need to be maintained throughout the year to keep up with safety requirements and to help them run longer. Owners may take part in much of their cars maintenance without sending it in to a manufacture.

Fuse, headlights, and windshield wiper replacements can be done by the owner to save money. Make sure that car parts are up-to-date to increase safety on the road and decrease long term expenses.

Tires in particular are easy to check. Make sure your tires are always properly inflated. It provides for a smoother ride and better gas usage. Drivers need to check their tire pressure from week to week. It is important to drive with thick tire tread rather than thinned out to prevent accidents. At approximately 5000 miles, rotate your tires. Wheel lugs need to be tightened prior to a long trip or any driving activity.

Fluid levels are important to check as much as possible when a vehicle is driven a lot. However, keeping an eye on brake fluid levels and power steering levels can help prevent problems too, as when these get too low they can cause serious problems. Brakes are sensitive though, and caution must be exercised when topping up the brake fluid level ñ fill it only to the marker on the bottle and no more. Adding coolant to the radiator should be part of a regular maintenance check as well.

Check lights and indicators at least once a month. Indicator flashers blink quickly when a bulb blows out. Anyone can change the bulb themselves, but cannot touch the glass on the bulb. These bulbs are halogen bulbs, and any residue left on the glass could make it heat up more in that area and explode.

Increase full efficiency with a cleaner car. It also looks better. Shielding a car with wax reduces scratches and weathering. Application of wax is quick, easy and affordable for the protection of a car. Clean brake dust off the wheels regularly too. Brake dust decreases the overall performance of a car. Because there is a lot of static on the wheels, use cold clean water and a sponge to remove the dust easily.

Check for corrosion and reduced battery life through battery maintenance. Battery posts must be cleaned and water levels have to be right to create a clean start.

Weekend maintenance examinations can decrease potential threats to you and your car. Automotive safety starts with good maintenance.
