It has been established that there are many benefits to getting pedicures. In addition to making your feet feel better, when massage is included, pedicures have been known to lower your stress and pain and improve blood flow. Professional pedicures, however, are not something that many folks are interested in having. Getting a professional pedicure means having your feet subjected to things that have been used on many other customers and you never know if the salon has excellent hygienic standards. Fortunately, a do-it-yourself pedicure is something anybody can do. So here’s how you can without having to leave your home.
The first thing you need to do is use a non-acetone polish remover (acetone is not good for your body) to remove any polish that might still be on your toenails. Next you need to clip the toenails (straight across) and use a nail file to smoothen down any rough edges. See to it that you use a toenail clipper rather than a fingernail clipper. There is a curve in fingernail clippers that can cause toenails to become ingrown and painful.
Soak your feet in a warm bath. Try letting your feet sit in warm water for approximately three minutes. You can add things like lavender bath salts or other skin moisturizers and soothers. This makes your foot bath even more relaxing and is a great way to take care of your feet to help them feel better. Virtually every bath and body section of stores have things to make a foot bath better. Obviously, a few might cost a little more but choose the ones you like most.
Use a pumice to smooth down any rough spots or calluses that could still be left after the foot bath. Avoid using callus shavers or similar tools. Plain old pumice stones are just fine.
Once you’re done using the pumice stone, it is time to wash your feet. After you have rinsed off any pumice or callus dust as well as any foot soak additives that could be clinging on, apply some moisturizing lotion. There are plenty of moisturizing lotions that are made specifically for the feet. It is okay to merely rub in the lotion in quick motion if you are in a rush, but try not to settle for this. Try massaging in the lotion if you can. Massage has been found to help calm your feet and, by extension, the rest of your body.
When your feet are all clean, callus free and moisturized, it is time to make them attractive. This isn’t essential but it can do wonders for your confidence to know that, even if they are enclosed in shoes, your toes are beautiful. Try to push back your cuticles with a cuticle pusher (the trimmers can cause cuts on your skin and introduce infections). Next, apply a base layer of nail strengthening polish. Once the first coat has had the time to dry properly, you cna put on whatever colors or designs that you like!
