Male Drivers Under 22 Face Highest Car Insurance Costs
It was reported in the news yesterday that insurance costs for males under the age of 22 has gone up dramatically in the last year, this is thought to be due in part to the increasing amount of young drivers on the roads without any insurance. This actually affects everyone on the roads, every extra youngster driving without insurance will push up premiums not just for that age group but the general public as a whole.
It is thought that the number of accident claims made by under 22s have gone up recently adding to the costs of insurance. It was reported that the average costs of a years car insurance now for a male under 22 was two and half thousand pounds. This means that many will be paying out in insurance more than their car is worth.
I have always championed the case for learning to drive at a young age and this perfectly demonstrates why. Someone insuring their first car at age 22 will face crippling costs and will either require financial help from their parents or will simply have to give up on driving all together as it is simply not financially viable,
This astronomic cost means that someone taking out contract hire even on a lowly car with a small engine like a BMW 3 Series will see most of their monthly outgoings wasted on their car. Add to this the cost of servicing and tax and owning a car for this age bracket becomes a near impossibility.
The curse of the vicious circle is also relevant here however, if the under 22s do not drive, they will never be able to get reasonable car insurance or build up any no claims meaning at whatever age they decide to start driving, they will face an up struggle that a hill start won’t help with! Learning to drive at 17 even if you don’t particularly want to at the time, is the best option., that way you at least be able to afford a mazda mx-5 by the time you’re 30!
